MNC completes Precious Places video on the Manayunk Canal
In 2004, Manayunk Neighborhood Council made it's first Precious Places video about the loss of the old Manayunk Club and how it related to the neighborhood's evolving social structures. Precious Places is a Community Oral History project of Scribe Video Center (http://www.scribe.org/about/preciousplaces). MNC has recently completed another video "The Manayunk Canal". In this eight-minute video they tell the story of the canal's evolution from, in the early 1800's, bringing coal and goods from up north, to powering the textile mills of Manayunk, before sliding into disrepair and neglect. MNC charts the revival, through the 70's, 80's and 90's, as a walking and biking path is built and the waterway is dredged and stabilized. Finally they look forward to the planned performing arts center, kayaking and boating, and the full restoration of the locks on this only remaining complete section of the original Schuylkill Navigation system.
