The Green Tree Run Flooding

By George E. Beetham Jr. for the Review
Residents living along Green Tree Run northwest of Shawmont Ave. get anxious when it rains heavily. Three times during August the little run, which one can normally step across without getting wet feet, flooded.
The floods tore up the stream’s flood plain, not to mention whatever works humans had erected along the normally picturesque stream.
The floods resulted from a number of issues: prolonged rains over a wet spring and summer soaked the ground; heavy rainfalls in short periods; and a storm drain that apparently backed up due to debris.
Residents contacted the Philadelphia Water Department, which is working with them to develop long-term strategies that hopefully will alleviate some of the problems. While the residents say they are happy with the department’s response, the department says that the issues are not going to be solved easily.
