Coming Together

What is one to do when the ground is frozen and a cold wind is blowing? Meet and Plan!

A number of efforts are in the works in preparation for warmer weather along the River. Community leaders, interested citizens and Schuylkill Project staff have been busy behind the scenes. Here is just a snapshot of some of what is being planned for the upcoming year:

Travelling Exhibit
There are so many organizations working along the River and many opportunities to tell the story of their work. An interactive exhibit is being planned that can travel around to area events and engage the public, raising awareness and inspiring action. (A hint of what it might be: think maps!) Look for this exhibit this spring at an event near you!

Tools for Our Volunteers
The Northwest section of Philadelphia is fortunate to possess a very active volunteer community. These volunteer groups hold regular volunteer workdays for clean-ups, trail-building, invasives removal and the planting of native plants. Probably the biggest struggle facing these groups is having the appropriate tools in an accessible place for the various locations they work in. Operating on a shoestring, they have great leadership and an ever-growing volunteer base, but they don’t possess the necessary tools.

Thanks to State Representative Kathy Manderino and a grant from the DCED, the Schuylkill Project is working with area volunteer groups to create a tool cache that will help facilitate the work they do that is so beneficial for the health of our watershed.

Programming
If you can see it, touch it and experience it, chances are you will become an advocate for it. It is with this philosophy that the Schuylkill Project recently held a meeting of various recreation and environmental organizations to brainstorm programming for the upcoming year. Whether it’s helping to spread the word on what is already out there or creating connections for new ways to get out on the water, you’ll find it on the happenings calendar at www.destinationschuylkillriver.org.
