Waterfront News in East Falls
Kelly Drive in East Falls is a popular spot for bicyclists, runners, fishermen and sightseers, whether it's part of a casual visit or a long distance workout loop. Thanks to some recent developments, it's now even more hospitable for trail users.
The Trolley Car Cafe has recently opened up at the Bathey, located at South Ferry Road and Kelly Drive (just under the Rte. 1 overpass). The historical structure, once a bath house, was rehabbed to accommodate the eatery, while also providing amenities to trail users including bicycle rentals, restrooms and an interactive gateway exhibit. What's more is that there is a convenient low-cost public parking lot (50 cents an hour!) located right there which makes East Falls a great jumping off point.
Meanwhile, all lanes on Kelly Drive are now open following a storm water sewer construction project undertaken by the PWD. The project provides flood relief benefits to parts of the Northwest section of the city and improves water quality in the Schuylkill River. It is part of a two year project to install a 12.5' diameter tunnel under Kelly Drive, the adjacent cemetery and community. Perhaps the most visible benefit for visitors is a lovely scenic overlook at the site which has just been opened, adding yet another reason to stop and enjoy the River in East Falls.
