Destination Schuylkill River helps those who help themselves

New fundraising and mini-grant program kicks off with a party on February 5

Volunteers in the East Falls, Lower Merion, Manayunk and Shawmont communities know there is nothing to compare to the feeling of getting out in the great outdoors and making a difference. It’s hard to put a value on the countless hours they spend cleaning up, planting and fostering stewardship. However, when it comes to plant materials and the tools they need to get their good work done, there are definite numbers in the form of dollar signs. Every time a new project is undertaken, costs rack up in the form of repair or replacement of tools or the purchase of plants and other needed supplies. As part of Destination Schuylkill River’s commitment to volunteer groups working along the River in our neck of the woods, a mini-grant program is being launched to support these efforts.

Along the line of “helping those who help themselves”, area volunteers approached Destination Schuylkill River to work with them in fundraising. The groups will work collaboratively to raise donations to fund the mini-grant program, which they can then go back to when the need arises. The first fundraiser will be held at Bourbon Blue in Manayunk (on the Canal at Rector Street) on Saturday, February 5th from 6:30-10:00. Tickets to the event will be $20.00, available for advance purchase or at the door. The tickets will cover a first drink, light appetizers and drink specials for the evening. A silent eco-art auction will also be part of the night’s festivities.
