Old-time barge rides to return to New Hope

Beneath a canopy of maples, they sit in the shallows of the Delaware Canal north of New Hope: 18 tons of aluminum, collecting leaves, and sap, and rainwater.
But the two unemployed canal barges, long moored behind the Centre Bridge Inn, might soon be collecting tourist dollars again.
For visitors to New Hope, the lure of a leisurely, mule-drawn barge ride up the historic waterway ended in 2007, after floods had left the canal damaged and drained. Now, though, innkeeper and barge owner Jerry Horan - who ran the attraction until it ran aground - sounds as buoyant as his fleet.
