Schuylkill River Area Explored in New Book

Two staff members of the local Schuylkill River Heritage Area write pictorial history

New from Arcadia Publishing and local authors Laura Catalano and Kurt Zwikl is Along the Schuylkill River in the popular Images of America series, featuring over 200 vintage images.

Authors researched dozens of photograph collections to find the oldest, rarest and most interesting images of the region. They have included multiple pictures of the Schuylkill Canal, such as old canal barges, mules, boatmen and locks. The book contains images from virtually every major town and city along the Schuylkill River and gives a glimpse into what life was like across the region from the mid-19th to the early 20th centuries. It includes photos of numerous “firsts” in America: the first wire suspension bridge, opening day of America’s first zoo, the first tunnel in North America and the country’s first vineyard.

Book signings have been scheduled at the following locations:
• Sat. Sept. 26, 2009, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.—Schuylkill Haven Borough Day, Schuylkill Haven. Table will be located in front of the Historical Society on St. John Street.
