Rollin' on the River

One of the best ways to learn to appreciate and respect nature is to get out in it.
Especially now that the weather is cooling off a bit.
In a recent newsletter, the Schuylkill River Heritage Area profiled five businesses that will get you paddling on the Schuylkill River. Here it is:
Schuylkill River Outdoors: Located in Monocacy, about 20 minutes east of Reading, this newly established business offers tubing, rafting and kayaking trips ranging from one-hour to an entire day. A pair of bald eagles apparently is seen regularly on that portion of the river. www.schuylkillriveroutdoors.com
Reading Rivertribe: Another new business, it's at 545 Canal St. in Reading, under the Canal Street Pub. Rent kayaks, canoes, tubes or rafts. They take you on a bus to one of several points along the Schuylkill so you can float back to end your trip at the pub. www.readingrivertribe.com.
Port Providence Paddle: Located on the canal in Port Providence, near Phoenixville, this business offers custom trips for groups, as well as several established trips. One popular option is a loop trip along a piece of the Schuylkill Canal and back down the river. Begin and end at Fitzwater Station Restaurant. www.canoeandkayak.biz
Hidden River Outfitters: This outfitter will take you on a guided kayak tour in Philadelphia, including some that end with a meal at the Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant. All tours include paddling instruction and equipment rental. Tours offered on weekends through October. www.hiddenriveroutfitters.com
HRO Adventures: This new business, an outgrowth of Hidden River Outfitters, is focused on offering kayak tours and instruction in the Pottstown area. The company is establishing a paddling center in Pottstown, in conjunction with the Schuylkill River Heritage Area and Montgomery County Community College. Plans are to open in the spring. The idea is to weave kayaking activities into environmental education and children's fitness programs. www.hroadv.com
