PSU Philadelphia Master Gardeners offer workshops for all


The Philadelphia Master Gardeners are members of a "volunteer corps" which supports the programming efforts of Penn State Extension to educate the public on best practices in consumer horticulture and environmental stewardship. Master Gardeners are people with a demonstrated interest in community volunteerism and a willingness to share their knowledge through teaching, demonstrating and consulting.

One way they share is through a series of workshops on gardening topics, the Master Gardeners Second Saturday Series. Interested? Call 215-471-2200, Ext 100 to pre-register for Winter Workshops. Workshops start at 9:30 am. The registration fee is $10 and they take place at the Fairmount Park Horticultural Center, N. Horticultural and Montgomery Drives in Philadelphia, PA 19131.

January 8 - Seed Starting
Seed starting indoors is fun, can save you money and allow you to grow
hard to find varieties of vegetables and flowers. Alexis Kidd a
Philadelphia Master Gardener will present the different seed starting
methods, resources to get you started, and how to build a light stand
for under $11.


February 12 - Up On The Roof: The legalese behind green roofs and rooftop farms
Green roofs and rooftop farming hold tremendous hope for improving
stormwater management and food access, especially in urban areas. Two
representatives from a recent Philadelphia rooftop farming initiative
will talk about how to green our skylines. The focus will be on the
municipal labyrinth of zoning and code enforcement, and engineering
realities of old buildings. The presenters are Stephanie Alarcon, a
Philadelphia County Master Gardener, and Master of Environmental
Studies candidateat the University of Pennsylvania and Zhenya Fomin, a
former green roofer and graduate student at Philadelphia University.


March 12 - Small Space Gardening
Gardening in a small space has its own rewards and challenges. The basic principles still apply, but when your whole garden can be viewed at once, there is no room for error. Join Lucille Amadie and Sue Sipos, a masterful pari of Philadelphia Master Gardeners, who will share creative ideas and innovative ways to make your small spaces resplendent.

April 9 - EZ Steps to Grow Vegetables
Julie Cox, Philadelphia Master Gardener and avid long time vegetable gardner, will be addressing the questions and dilemmas of the beginning vegetable gardener. Topics will include site selection, soil testing, planning, planting, nurturing and harvesting in a mostly organic approach.
